So, I made this thread just so we can all discuss the differences of these two completly different boards!

Just so we all know, the same rules apply here as the rest of the board, even if they like the board we don't use. Wink

I like PunBB better, however PHPBB2 can come in handy if you're a beginner to CSS.

I'd disagree with the PHPBB2 being handy with Css - the ability to use CSS is as large as any other board, but, it takes more complex coding in order to achieve something simple, not to mention the high chance of requirement to edit the templates if u edit the css Razz
Id say PHPBB2's CSS is terrible, and best for someone with alot of experience.

But then there's so many more codes, and they all list the same things.
For example, the viewtopic_body has 3 'thanksbackground' codes, and all do the same thing lol.
But yea, it's the best to start off with, though you will want to progress much quicker then you think Smile

I dislike Phpbb2 even though I started with it.
I hate its square theme it's ugly.
PunBB gives you more options of things to do and better coding and looks I think.

O.o are you saying PHPBB2 is newer then PunBB?

If so, you've got it visa versa, PunBB came AFTER PHPBB2 - which was written in the last millennium

PunBB is so good though Smile

IPB is pretty good - not as good as BB3, but still pretty good.
Id still choose PunBB over IPB, unless ofcause FM upgrades to IPB3 cheers

Templates aren't needed. I'd say there are plenty of boards out there nowadays that prove that.
Its not as a hard as people think to manipulate the page to a new layout using JS. One example is; people think VBulletin style post layout is only possible with template editing - false.

Omg LiMiTz, just kidding. I had starting with phpBB2 too, then to PunBB because it's simple but wonderful if you cosumize your theme with Stylesheet and templates. I love you

To be honest, I have never liked the default punBB look through Forumotion so I have sticked with phpBB2, you guys are making have new eyes for it, hahah.

Also, a lot of the repetitive codes on phpBB2 comes in order to let you choose that from the administrator panel. For example the location of the banner, but it gets annoying becuase the code is long. Does this also happens with punBB?

puBB just look so very simple for me... D:

Well, first when i start with Forumotion 2 years ago i used phpBB2, was ok but then i changed to BB3 for some time and now I'm on punBB and i just want to say that i love it you can do so much with it.

Btw any thing with Templates is good.

For me, it comes down to what I'm trying to add/change on to a forum. Somethings are easier to change in BB2 and some are easier in PunBB. At the moment I have a forum that uses BB2 and the current layout for that is reasonable, I managed to do a fair amount of changing to it. However, I am trying to build a new theme for it in PunBB and I'm finding that changing certain things is harder and requires further changing first, mainly templates.

Saying that, I really wish there was template editing for BB3 because I really like the way some of the features and areas are laid out in that version.

BB4 is supposed to be coming out soon isn't it? I was reading up on it about 8 months ago and the article said that it would be released at some point within the next 2 years.

If you could edit templates on phpBB3, I would choose it in a heartbit too.

I have implemented punBB now, since I found a HitSkin that liked a lot, I also figured that since it is not used at much it helps the community stand up a bit better. I will let you know how editing the templates and implementing CSS goes for me with it. Razz
